Municipalities in this province include Quilengues, Humpata, Chibia, Chiange, Quipungo, Caluquembe, Caconda, Chicomba, Matala, Chipindo and Kuvango. The winding road known as Leba Hill, as well as the Bicuari National Park are in Huíla Province.

It was the location of much of the fighting in the Angolan Civil War. The town of Jamba in the province was the home base for Jonas Savimbi's UNITA and the host of the "Democratic International" or "Jamba Jamboree", a meeting of anti-communist insurgents put on by United States conservative lobbyists Jack Abramoff and Jack Wheeler and funded by Lewis Lehrman in 1985.
