Howland Township, Ontario

Howland Township is a geographic township and former municipality in the municipality of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, District of Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada.

Howland Township was named in 1864 for William Pearce Howland (1811-1907), Father of Confederation and Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario from 1868-1873.

The municipality included portions of the geographic townships of Bidwell and Sheguiandah. Sheguiandah was the administrative centre and largest community in the township.

Howland Township was dissolved as a municipality on January 1, 1998 with the creation of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. According to the 2001 Census, Howland had a population of 995 over an area of 275.5 square kilometres.
