Howard Clement, III

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Howard Clement, III is a member of the town council of Durham, North Carolina.

An attorney and alumnus of Howard University, Clement was first appointed to the Durham City Council in 1983 and has served continuously since then, including four years (1997-2001) as mayor pro tem. Clement was most recently re-elected in 2001, representing Ward 2 (southeastern Durham).

In March of 1963, Clement moved to Durham from Charleston, South Carolina, where he grew up. A relative who had persuaded him to work at Durham's North Carolina Mutual Insurance Co., one of North Carolina's largest black-owned businesses, told Clement that Durham was extremely progressive and the "indignities" he'd been subjected to in Charleston "would be of no account in Durham," according to Clement. However, his very first night in Durham he was denied the right to register at the Jack Tar hotel.

Working tirelessly for civil rights, Clement helped integrate the Carolina Theatre and other Durham businesses. He also stood on the reviewing stand during Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I have a Dream" speech.
