Houston I. Flournoy

Houston "Hugh" Irving Flournoy (born 1929) is a former California politician and former professor of public administration at the University of Southern California (USC).
Born October 7, 1929 in New York City, he attended Cornell University, where he was active in the Cornell University Glee Club and the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. After graduating in 1950, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he relocated to California and became active in Republican politics.
He was on the Pomona College faculty in the Department of Political Science from 1957 through 1960. He was elected to the California State Assembly and served 1961-1966, when he was elected California State Controller. He served as Controller 1967-1975. In 1974 he ran for Governor of California but lost to Jerry Brown.
In 1976 he was appointed professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. He taught at the School of Public Administration (now part of the School of Policy, Planning, and Development) until 1993. He also served the USC administration as a governmental affairs advisor until 1999. He has also served on the boards of several corporations. Since retirement he has resided in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
