[edit] General
This is the Model United Nations conference of Houston. Every year high schools in the Houston and its suburb areas meet at University of Houston in February and try to accomplish what the United Nations does but only in 48 hours.
[edit] History
In 1975, Andrea Flynn decided that, as a result of her love for teaching, she would provide a way for someone to walk in another's shoes.
[edit] Parts
HAMUN breaks down the participants into eight bodies with four of them being principal organs of the United Nations. The organs are United Nations General Assembly, International Court of Justice, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council. The General Assembly is divided into four sub organs, GA Plenary, GA 1, GA 3, and GA 6. The other four bodies are the Commission of Human Rights, NATO, Commission on Science and Technology for Development, and International Atomic Energy Council. All countries in the United Nations that are a part of these bodies are represented.
[edit] Participation
Students who show interest in this organization are obliged to submit a policy paper on a particular topic within their chosen body. There are set guidelines they have to follow to pass. The students also have be present at one of two DRWs. DRWs are workshops where they learn about the convention and sometimes have a practice convention. If their policy paper passes and they attend a DRW, then only is the student allowed to go to convention.
[edit] Secretariats
The secretariats are college students who have passed through HAMUN and based on their merit, they are appointed by the head officials. Their responsibilites are to read and approve policy papers and during convention they monitor their respective body.
[edit] Scholarships and Other Awards
Yearly, two scholarships are given out to one student respectfully.
During the closing ceremonies of the convention, there are awards given a handful of "diplomats" based on their active participation and other merits. The secretariats of each body will choose either one or two that fulfilled the criteria and went up and beyond to be awarded this honor.
