In the 1998 film Blade, the House of Erebus is a council that contains twelve pure blood vampire tribe leaders who use their vast wealth and knowledge to blend in with humanity and continue their discretion to the world. They descended with a common name and glyph design being particular to each. The House was part of the major plot to bring forth La Magra. Their name is likely to have been derived from the ancient Greek god Erebus, who was regarded as the god of darkness (and would therefore figure importantly in vampire mythology).

It is also of note that the House of Erebus are not the sole controllers of vampire politics, as displayed by the continued existence of a vampire power-base in Blade II, under the control of the Elder Eli Damaskinos (who must have had an operating system of authority during the events of the first film).

Deacon Frost, the antagonist of the film, uses the vampire council as part of his plan to raise La Magra, the Blood god, in a ritual to take place in the Temple of Eternal Night. This ritual allowed the various powers of each vampire type to be transferred to Frost, conferring on him the powers of the Blood god.

Incidentally, the concept of the vampire "tribes" in the Blade series appears to be in imitation of and/or have basis in the Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing game created by White Wolf, Inc., which was the first to popularize the idea of vampire clans and bloodlines. Many of the tribes also have similarities to some the clans of said game (i.e. the Dragonetti are sorcerers like the Tremere, the Lemure are seductive and passionate like the Toreador, the Kobejitsu and Von Esper are bloodlusting assassins like the Assamites, etc).

[edit] Erebus tribe families

[edit] Ashe

The Ashe Tribe are the most sensitive to those elements most traditionally used to combat vampires. Ultra violet rays, sunlight, silver and garlic are said to have a stronger effect on these vampires.

[edit] Cianteto

The Cianteto Tribe is from Mexico, supposedly raised from the dead by the same witches that gave Montezuma his immense power. A warrior caste, they have the strength of ten men and regenerate limbs lost in battle.

[edit] Dragonetti

The Dragonetti Tribe are influential sorcerers dating back to pre-Medieval times, who were reincarnated and returned to Europe. They consider themselves as the first pure bred vampires.

[edit] Faustinas

The Faustinas Tribe are believed to have gained their “pure blood” status by practicing Santería. Along with physical strength, they also can control minds, matter and the elements. Faustinas can only be terminated with a silver stake though the heart and must also be decapitated or they will be reborn with more power than they possessed before. The House of Erebus has twelve members and eleven tribes, two seats being held by the Faustinas identical twin female leaders.

[edit] Kobejitsu

The members of the Kobejitsu Tribe are proficient assassins known as the Death Ninjas. Strong and agile possessing unusual stamina, the Kobejitsu can be identified by their red, bulging eyes. They are the only members of the House of Erebus that do not cast a shadow.

[edit] Lemure

The Lemure Tribe of Rome were originally evil spirits that inhabited corpses and turned the dead into immortal night stalkers. Known for their ability to seduce their prey, they are beautiful denizens of the dark and frequent underground raves and Goth clubs.

[edit] Ligaroo

This Ligaroo Tribe is from France. During the night, they shed their skin, turning into a ball of fire to methodically stalk their prey. They feed only from the jugular and are the only Tribe that hoards blood for use later.

[edit] Lobishomen

The Lobishomen Tribe are linked to werewolves from Brazil. It is believed that the original Lobishomen were killed by a werewolf and returned to the earth as a vampire. Given the number of deaths attributed to werewolves, the Lobishomen is the largest clan in the House of Erebus.

[edit] Pallintine

The Tribe of Pallintine hails from the Baltic region and are some of the wealthiest industrialists in the Vampire Nation. Their vast wealth has allowed them to blend into society somewhat invisibily.

[edit] Upier

The Upier Tribe are born with a full set of teeth and razor sharp fangs. Originally from Eastern Europe, these vampires are particularly lethal and feared because of their ability to hone their deadly skills at an early age.

[edit] Von Esper

The Von Esper Tribe are the most violent and ruthless members in the House of Erebus. They are efficient assassins and are easily swayed or involved when bloodshed is to be taken.

[edit] Trivia

  • In the film, Deacon Frost had his custom glyph designed to mark his own familiars (Humans who, if do enough services for their vampire master and prove themselves worthy, will be turned).
  • The House has been mentioned in Blade: The Series and was planned to have a major role in its second season.
