House of Bishops

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Bishops is the third House in a General Synod of some Anglican churches and the second house in the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America.

[edit] Composition of a General Synod

This consists of the two Archbishops, plus the 3 Houses - Bishops - in which the Diocesan Bishops attend as of right, while a fixed number of suffragan bishops are elected to the House. The houses of Clergy and Laity are elected from the members of the Diocesan Synods by the Synod members themselves.

[edit] Composition of the Episcopal General Convention

This consists of the House of Deputies, comprising elected clergy and lay deputies from each diocese of the church and presided over by a president, who can be either a priest or a lay person; and the House of Bishops, comprising all bishops of the church, presided over by the presiding bishop.
