Houma Junior High School opened for classes in September, 1955. Prior to the opening of Houma Junior High, students attended Houma Central, located at the present site of the parish courthouse annex. In 1954, ground-breaking ceremonies were held for the present building, constructed for approximately $750,000, to house seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. Upon its opening, the structure included only the present main building which housed the administrative office area, the cafeteria, the library, a multipurpose room used as a gymnasium/auditorium, and thirty-one classrooms. In 1969-70 Houma Junior High School was totally integrated with the all-black Southdown High School. The unitary system was accomplished by converting Southdown High School into a middle school and by combining Houma Junior High School and the adjacent Terrebonne High School into one school with an overall administrator and with two assistant principals at each building. The school's name was changed to Terrebonne High School Building B which housed grades nine and ten. The school mascot, the bulldog, was also dropped and became the tiger. In 1975-76 Terrebonne High School Building B was renamed Houma Junior High School but kept the tiger as its mascot. During 1976-77 HJH platooned with Terrebonne High while Terrebonne underwent major renovations. Terrebonne students attended classes in the morning while Houma Junior High students went to school in the afternon. In 1978-79 school year saw the return of the bulldog as the mascot. The Marjorie Sinclair Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society was established during the 1982-83 school session. This organization was named for a former Houma Junior High School teacher.
