[edit] HoTMetaL and HoTMetaL Pro
First commercial HTML authoring product released in 1994 by SoftQuad Software of Toronto, Canada. Based on the sophisticated SGML engine of Author Editor, HoTMetaL was released with a free version and a professional version (HoTMetaL Pro). It received PC Magazine's Editors Choice Award in 1995 as well as a variety of other awards.
[edit] The Name HoTMetaL
The name HoTMetaL has the H, T, M and L capitalized emphasizing the HTML that it was designed to edit. HoTMetaL as a name, aside from having the capitalization, was also what printset operators would call the metal type used in their printing machines (hot metal).
[edit] What became of the HoTMetaL product line
HoTMetaL went through several incarnations from versions 1 though 6. Eventually the product line was killed as HTML editor, but the user interface lives on in [XMetaL], a commercial XML editor.
