Hoss Delgado
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoss Delgado is a fictional character from the animated television series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Hoss Delgado is voiced by Diedrich Bader.
[edit] Biography
Hoss is a spectral Bounty Hunter; a hunter of paranormal creatures. Modeled after Ash, the protagonist of the famed Evil Dead horror movie trilogy, Hoss possesses one real hand and one mechanical one, the latter of which can seemingly produce any tool he desires, most commonly a chainsaw-firing crossbow. Hoss also greatly physically resembles Snake Plissken (long red hair and an eyepatch), the character portrayed by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's films "Escape from New York" and "Escape from L.A.". Hoss is the macho, takes-no-prisoners, gung-ho, manly figure in Grim adventures, but not very bright.
He first encountered Grim in Hoss Delgado: Spectral Exterminator. He thought that Billy and Mandy were being held hostage and that Grim was raising "an evil army of singing dinosaurs". He fights with Grim and wins. Hoss intended to exterminate him, but after he learned the truth of their relationship, he congratulated the two children and left (apparently to battle a werewolf in Canada).
Since then he has returned on several occasions to both aid and hamper the citizens of Endsville, occasionally after being summoned for help. He fought with Grim again twice, in Big Trouble in Billy's Basement and Brown Evil, and he won in both fights.
In the episode Guess What's coming to dinner?, Hoss fell in love with Eris, but when he tried to break up with her, Eris banished Hoss to the "Puppet Dimension." He somehow escapes and returns later, now is Eris's boyfriend.
[edit] Appearances
- Hoss Delgado: Spectral Exterminator - While Billy, Mandy and Grim were going to field trip to a museum, Hoss spots Grim with the children, and thinks that the children are held hostage. Grim and Mandy are bored in the museum and sneak out with Billy to see the dinosaurs. Mandy commanded Grim to make the dinosaurs dance. Hoss was following them, and when he saw what they were doing, he concluded that Grim "raised an evil army of singing dinosauruses", and attacked him. He won the battle, and just when he was going to exterminate Grim, Grim confused him as he was happy to go back to the Underworld. Then Grim explained his relationship with Billy and Mandy - he didn't kidnap them, they kidnapped him. After hearing that, Hoss congratulates Billy and Mandy and leaves them (apparently to battle with a werewolf in Canada).
- Big Trouble in Billy's Basement - Billy, while reading "The Bad Book", was possessed by "Yog-Sawhaw" and stole Grim's scythe to summon his master. Billy created a portal and in his basement, and his house was turned into an Underworld Citadel filled with various creatures. Mandy called Hoss for help. Hoss, Grim and Mandy entered Billy's house, trying to stop him. They started a battle, and Mandy eventually pushed Billy with The Bad Book into the portal, turning everything back to normal.
- Brown Evil - When Billy bakes brownies with Grim's Evil Powder, the brownies he made were awful, but they attracted the Undead. Mandy ordered Grim to throw them in the garbage can, but he kept some inside his skull. The brownies from Grim's head attracted zombies from all over the world; and soon Billy's house is surrounded by zombies, and Hoss returns to save the day.
- Bearded Billy - When Hoss heard that there is a Sasquach in town, he returns to catch it and win the prize.
- Irwin gets a clue - Irwin is desperate because Mandy doesn't love him, so Hoss tries to teach Irwin to be cool, eventually turning Irwin into himself.
- Guess What's coming to dinner? - Billy has problems at school, so Hoss and Eris pretend that they are Billy's parents to the school principal.
- Chaos Theory - While shopping at Costmo, Mandy and Grim notice that the store is unusually organized. This is because Hoss Delgado is dating Eris, thus bringing order to her life. Without chaos, Hoss can no longer do what he does best, which is fighting off monsters. So, with the help of Billy, Mandy, Grim and Irwin, he tries to break up with her.
- Billy Gets an "A" - He occasionally appears on the side of the screen as a time card with a frame of time painted on his chest.
- Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure - He didn't actually appear in the movie, but in the credits he is seen watching TV and eating chocolate ice cream and the caption below says "Hoss Delgado did not appear in this movie".
[edit] Trivia
- In Big Trouble in Billy's Basement when Mandy called Hoss for help she told Grim that she called "A friend of mine", but in Bearded Billy Hoss didn't know who she was and thought that Mandy was a boy. It is quite possible though this is due to Hoss never being very bright.
- Hoss' design changes slightly after "Big Trouble in Billy's Basement", among other things he wears commando boots as opposed to red cowboy boots from then on.
- In the Spanish version his name is Rene Gado ( a pun on the word renegade)
- In Irwin Gets A Clue, Hoss Delgado revealed much of his past to Irwin: he used to be a skinny nerd (which might be the reason why his last name is Delgado, as "delgado" means "thin" or "slender" in Spanish). He was less popular than a traffic cone named Kyle (whom he eventually locked in his basement as revenge). He used to wet the bed every night until he was 32, and his father named him "The Midnight Sailor." He is 33 years old now. He once claimed that when he was nine his mom said he was a girl and started calling him Rosey.
- Often in TV Captions, he is misspelled as Hos Del Gato.
