[edit] Mini-biography
- Eric "Hoss" Cartwright was born in 1836, somewhere between California and Nevada. He is the son of Ben Cartwright and his second wife, Inger Borgstrom, a Swedish immigrant.
- "Hoss" means "tall, friendly man" in Swedish.
- Hoss is the tallest, biggest, yet kindest, Cartwright.
- As the series progressed, Hoss's hair got much thicker as a result of Blocker following the leads of Lorne Greene and Pernell Roberts in wearing a wig as his hair thinned.
- Hoss died off-camera during the thirteenth season of Bonanza, the cause of which was never given.
- The in-show death of Hoss was necessitated by the real world death of actor Dan Blocker due to complications from gall bladder surgery.
- Blocker's son, Dirk Blocker, is also an actor and looks and sounds almost exactly like his father except that he's much smaller.
