HorrorClix

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HorrorClix is a collectible miniatures game (CMG) announced by WizKids Inc., and was released August 30, 2006. The game's tagline is "wicked fun."

HorrorClix version of Cthulhu

Similar to HeroClix, the most successful CMG to date, HorrorClix offers players the ability to construct teams of monsters that cross horror genres, allowing them to create a "dream team" of favorite bad guys or good guys. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and demons are available in the game's first release, as well as a number of vigilantes who fight for the side of good including a vampire hunter, ghost finders, priests and military men.

HorrorClix promises to revolutionize the CMG market by introducing several new game mechanics. Plot twist cards, scenario play, fiction, and individual character cards for each monster place the game's emphasis firmly on the fantasy of writing or directing a horror story rather than a game of fighting and combat. Innocent victims play an important part of the game, with monsters protecting them, eating them, or both.

HorrorClix demonstrations and special events have been announced at the Origins game convention in Columbus, Ohio, and for the GenCon game convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Additionally, WizKids announced at GAMA trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada that Cthulhu would be the premiere figure for the launch of the game.

[edit] Clix Bricks

To help "brick-and-mortar" stores compete against internet retail stores Horrorclix, Like HeroClix, uses the popular "buy it by the brick" configuration. A ClixBrick consists of 12 shrink-wrapped Boosters that include a special coupon for consumers who purchase Horrorclix at their local brick-and-mortar retailer. The coupon included in each brick unlocks a larger world of special figures and offers. Anyone who sends in 12 UPC codes, the coupon, and the receipt from that one-time retail purchase will receive a special free figure, only obtainable through the ClixBrick offer, as well another coupon that allows the customer to purchase the collector's set associated with each release at a 25% discount. [edit] Collectors' Sets

WizKids has stated that all figures released in boosters will be generic monsters, such as vampires and demons or characters available in the public domain, such as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. However, for each expansion set WizKids releases they will also be releasing at least one Collectors' Set, available for purchase directly from their website, that will contain licensed characters such as Jason Voorhees or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After winning an online poll, AVP: Alien Vs. Predator became the first movie for which WizKids acquired the rights. It has been announed that the Collector's Set system will be discontinued after the release of the AVP: Predator set, and all future licenced sets will be Action Packs.

  • Aliens - Released as the collectors set for the Horrorclix base set, the first collectors set will contain seven aliens. Because WizKids only acquired the rights for AVP: Alien Vs. Predator, only aliens from that movie will be seen. No characters from the first four alien movies will been in this set unless they also appeared in AVP.
  • Predator - Scheduled to be released with "The Lab" expansion set, the second collectors set will compliment the first and consist of Predators and perhaps other characters seen in AVP. Again, no characters seen in Predator or Predator 2 will be present in this set unless they were also seen in AVP.

[edit] Action Packs

In addition to Collector's Sets, licenced properties will be made available through regular commercial channels, in the form of Action Packs. Similar to theHorrorclix Starter Set, these packs will feature a number of pre-selected figures and Plot Twist cards, as well as a map, and will come from across the Horror entertainment spectrum.

  • AVP:Alien Queen - WizKids will release the Alien Queen as seen at the end of AVP: Alien Vs. Predator in an Action Pack. It will feature a two-stage Queen, usable with attached egg sack or without, as well as an exclusive Alien figure, an exclusive Predator figure, a map, Minion tokens, and Plot Twist cards. This set will be available February 21, 2007.
  • Hellboy - Scheduled to be released in March 2007, this Action Pack will feature 7 figures from the Dark Horse comic book. This is the first officially "Dual Branded" set, being designed for use in both Heroclix and Horrorclix. The dials will feature Heroclix symbols and powers, as well as Monster Cards that make the figures usable in Horrorclix games.

[edit] Colossal Figures

  • The Great Cthulhu - This 16" figure of Cthulhu comes packaged with a map, a set of instructions, and twenty-four Cultist Victim tokens. Cthulhu has three dials to represent himself and one dial to represent his attendant cultists. Cthulhu is playable in a 600, 1200, or 1800 point scenario where the players attempt to stop the ritual that will awaken him. This is similar to WizKids' earlier use of Galactus in Heroclix.

[edit] Convention Exclusives

  • A special dual-sided map featuring a Ruined Castle and a Carnival will be available free with any purchase at Wizkids Attended Conventions for the 2007 convention season.
  • A limited edition Vlad the Impaler figure will be available free with a $75.00 purchase at Wizkids Attended Conventions for the 2007 convention season.

[edit] HeroClix Crossovers

  • Marvel Zombie Figures: Four Ultra-rare chase figures are available in 1 out of every 100 Marvel Heroclix Supernova boosters: Colonel America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and Hulk. These are technically the first dual-branded figures as they appear in a Heroclix set yet come packed with Horrorclix monster cards, making them fully compatible. These four figures will not be reprinted as they appeared in this set in the 2007 Marvel Zombies set.
