Horns Rev

Horns Rev is a shallow area in the eastern North Sea, about 15 km / 10 miles off the west coast of Denmark, near the village of Blåvand.
[edit] Offshore wind park
At Horns Rev the Danish Energy company Elsam built the first offshore wind farm in the north sea. A total of 80 Vestas V80-2.0 MW units were installed in 2002 with the last turbine coming into operation on Dec 11 2002.
[edit] Teething problems
Over the next one and a half years of operation, 75 000 maintenance trips were carried out, that is two per turbine per day. Every time a wrench or new circuit board was needed they had to rely on a helicopter.
Technical failures of the transformers began in August 2003. By the winter some 20-30% of the transformers had been affected, owing to a combination of factors - manufacturing problems, weather conditions offshore, possibly salt in the air affecting the transformers, as well as after effects from the transformers being stored onshore. Elsam, turbine manufacturer Vestas, and ABB, who supplied the transformers and generators, analysed the situation. Alleged salt water ingress into generators and unit transformers along with what appeared to be manufacturing faults led to the decision to return the complete nacelles to the works at Ringkøbing and Lem for dismantling.
