[edit] Synopsis
Enterprise makes a rendezvous with Ensign Mayweather's family's cargo ship for a short visit while the Enteprise takes a trip to a planet under heavy volcanic activity.
[edit] Plot summary
At the direction of Starfleet, Enterprise makes a 30 light-year detour to a planet passing between two gas planets. The gravitational forces on the planet are going to cause heavy volcanic activity and the Enterprise detours to see it happen first-hand.
Ensign Mayweather realizes the Enterprise will be crossing paths with his family's cargo ship and makes a personal request to Captain Archer to take leave to visit them.
Commander Tucker talks T'Pol into watching Frankenstein for movie night (which will later be followed by Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein and, if the crew is lucky, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein). Much to his surprise, T'Pol not only enjoys the film but draws an unexpected analogy between the treatment of the Frankenstein Monster and the treatment of Vulcans on earth.
[edit] Trivia
- It has been suggested that the Horizon vessel is the same craft referenced in the TOS episode "A Piece of the Action". In that earlier episode, a book on Chicago organized crime gangs of the 1930s led a world to adopt a similar lifestyle. A book resembling the volume mentioned in the TOS episode is visible in one of the crew quarters Mayweather visits.
- Malcolm and Travis' conversation about putting families and counsellors on starships is a reference to Star Trek: The Next Generation, in which both had been placed on starships.
