Homey the Clown

Herman Simpson, more commonly known as Homey the Clown (or Homey D. Clown), is a character from the popular 1990s sketch comedy series In Living Color created by Paul Mooney. Played by Damon Wayans, Homey is a convicted felon forced to become a children's clown as a condition of parole.

Despite his ostensible role as a clown, Homey is surly, has a short temper and is not at all clown-like. When asked to perform, he either demands money or lashes out at bystanders, usually children, with a stuffed sock. This is typically followed by his catchphrases, "I don't think so!" and "Homey don't play that!". He concludes every party or gathering where he performs with the Homey the Clown song:

Homey the clown, don't mess around,
Even though the Man, try to keep him down.
One day Homey will, break all the chains,
Then he'll fly away, but until that day,
Homey don't play.

Often, the last verse deteriorates into a long diatribe about Homey's stance on life, which he menacingly insists any children present repeat in the sing-along, word for word.

Homey expresses great resentment of "The Man", feeling he is the cause of all his problems in life and his current situation. He often says things like, "My police file is a long list of lies perpetrated by 'The Man' to keep a brother down." Despite this, Homey once met "The Man" by infiltrating high culture, but later revealed it was all part of his "master plan to bop da man" with his trademark sock. Homey apparently has an illegitimate son, who looks exactly like him (including the face makeup and clown outfit).
