[edit] Synopsis
The Moyans have run out of food and are starving--John even tries to fry some dentics, but they're too disgusting to eat. Chiana insists that she knows of a nearby place where they can get food. They arrive on the enormous, rotting corpse of a budong--a gigantic space creature. Entire small cities form on such corpses, with miners digging for valuable crystals in the corpse, while avoiding acidic pus-filled pockets. To increase the danger, there is also some kind of violent monster, a keedva, living in the caves. China and Nerri had lived on the budong at some time in the past. She has several friends there, though a former lover of hers was just killed by the creature. Her lover's brother, B'Sogg, is sort of a leader on the budong, but he is unwilling to help her unless she join him there permanently as his lover, and says the Moyans won't get any meat until they earn it, despite their starving state. Zhaan is stuck on Moya--when her species becomes hungry, they turn ravenous and violent, producing spores that attract animals that she then feels an irresistible urge to kill and eat. They also weaken the "animals," which in this case are the other residents of Moya, and Moya and Pilot are themselves troubled by the spores.
On the budong, one of Chiana's friends sort of warns D'Argo against a romantic relationship with Chiana, though does not go into specifics. Chiana discovers that B'Sogg has been controlling the monster in the tunnels to attack and kill potential rivals to the wealth to be found there, including his own brother. Crichton is almost killed by the keedva and saves himself only by grabbing Rygel's throne sled, angering Rygel. Chiana gets her revenge on B'Sogg, they get their meat, and leave.
