[edit] Photo
Thanks, Richard, for inserting a picture for the article. I've been intending on taking a photo myself for use in the article but have been to lazy to get around to it! --R.carroll 18:52, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well there's a few photos on there now. I added a nice sunny shot of the town center.
- I thought it was a bit cheeky of mr anonymous who removed it, saying it was 'poor and low quality' (and in the same edit made the hazy reservoir photo too big again).
- It's not perfect though. Someone should pop out and take a similar sunny shot slightly earlier in the afternoon (less shadows at the bottom). -- Nojer2 16:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- I think it to be a good picture of that section of Holmfirth, Perhaps what the other user found, like I, was that if you clicked on it to see it fully, then you would see that it was a low resolution image and very pixilated when enlarged. Had it been a larger resolution image it would have been perfect. Why wait for someone else to take one? Get a camera and go for it. If you need any help in sorting it for the article just put a message on my talk page. Richard Harvey 17:29, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- Infact there is no need to rush up from London to do so. I have enhanced your original image, which I will insert in the article in place of the old 1970's image I placed there earlier. Richard Harvey 18:35, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

- Hehe. Yeah living in London now. Next time I'm in Holmfirth maybe.
- But I have the original photo right here (5 megapixels). I tend to upload pics fairly small to wikipedia, to save space... But here we go. I'll upload it again as a medium sized 1500 x 981px. That should be plenty. It means I've undone your filtering whatever that was. Did you make the colours warmer or something? -- Nojer2 09:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lodge's/Lodges
I shall revert edits by 213.177.254.57 to the last version by Adambro regarding the use of apostrophe in Lodge's. The supermarket in Holmfirth along with a number of others in the Huddersfield area were owned (prior to the Co-op acquisition) by F. & A. E. Lodge. Consequently, stores of the Lodge family were Lodge's. --R.carroll 21:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] History
Translating the name as Holywood is amusing but incorrect. The "holly" element is OK but "firth" means forest and, to quote Oliver Rackham (The History of the Countryside p65) "to the medievals a Forest was a place of deer, not a place of trees".

[edit] Peak District boundary
I note that the category 'Town and village of the Peak District' has been removed, with the editor stating that Holmfirth doesn't lie within the boundary. While I'm aware it's a few miles outside the Peak Park boundary, Holmfirth seems to be generally considered to be within, or at least on the edge of, the Peak District -- see the Peak District talk page. I'm not aware of any formal boundary, other than the Park one, for the district? Espresso Addict 21:28, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- As no-one responded, I've restored this category, according to the policy developed at the Peak District page. Please see the Peak District talk page for more details, or to enter the debate about categorising places in the Peak. Thanks. Espresso Addict 12:38, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
