Holy Names High School

Holy Names High School http://www.hnhsoakland.org/ is a private Catholic girls college preparatory high school located in the Oakland Hills in California. The school is also home to the convent for the sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary as well as Aurora Elementary School. Holy Names High School, a four year Catholic high school for girls, is sponsored by the sisters of the Holy Names. Established on the shore of Lake Merritt in 1868, Holy Names was the first high school in Oakland. In response to the growing population of the East Bay, the school moved to its present location of 5.78 acres on Harbord Drive in Upper Rockridge. The school attendance for that first year on the Hardbord Drive Campus, 1931-1932, numbered 302. In 1933, Holy Names High School was included on the list of accredited schools published by the Office of the Examiner of Schools of the State University, the official accrediting agency for the State of California. Since that time its accredetation has been consistently renewed. The school currently is accredited for the maximun term by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Twice Holy Names High School received national recognition as an Exemplary Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
