Holy Mountains (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Holy Mountains" is a song from the 2005 album Hypnotize, by the Californian alternative metal band System of a Down. The music was composed by guitarist Daron Malakian and lyrics were written by both him and singer Serj Tankian.

Musically, this song is similar to Aerials. It features a similar arpeggio, in which a melody played on the sixth string is alternated with open fifth and fourth strings, just like the arpeggio in Aerials. Later in the song, the same melody is played with power chords, ending with a long down slide played on the guitar, just like in the second chorus in Aerials.

"Holy Mountains" is written in C# minor, relying on C#m, E, B, F#m, and A as its main chords. The melody is written in simple variations of the C# minor scale - in fact, the verses are the eight notes of the ascending C# minor scale. The song's easily identifiable motif/riff is repeated throughout. The end of the song fades into the next track (Vicinity of Obscenity).

[edit] Meaning

All of the S.O.A.D. members are of Armenian descent, and some of their songs (e.g. "P.L.U.C.K." on their 1998 eponymous debut album) allude to Armenian issues such as the event known as the 1915 Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

The lyrics of the song are about Mount Ararat, which is considered the national symbol of Armenia, but lies within Turkey. The Book of Genesis identifies this mountain as the resting place of Noah's Ark. As bass guitarist Shavo Odadjian says, "that's one of our national landmarks, like the Armenian soccer team is called Ararat."

[edit] Internet leakage

A live bootleg of this song, titled "Holy Mountain" (in the singular), leaked on the Internet early 2005 before the album was published.
