Hoklo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The Hoklo ethnic-cultural group originated in southeast China (Fujian province), and now form a sizeable diaspora, particularly in such places as Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
- A slang term in Hong Kong (學佬, 鶴佬) for Hokkien-speaking people, or those with Hoklo/Fujianese origin.
- Fuk Lo Tsun Road (福佬村道), a street in Kowloon City, Hong Kong (literally, "Hoklo Village Road").
- A dialect in the Minnan language group, primarily used in Taiwan and called Holo. Other dialects in the same language group includes (not a complete list) Amoy (of Xiamen), Teochew (of Chaozhou), and Chiangchew (dialect) (of Zhangzhou). Teochew is one of the largest groups in Thailand and in Indochina. The variant spoken in Taiwan varies depending on whether one lives within Taipei County, Central Taiwan, or Southern Taiwan. It is suggested that Taiwanese dialect is actually a mixture of Amoy and Chiangchew along with much Japanese slang and possibly some colloquialisms from Taiwanese aborigines.
