Hogday Afternoon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hogday Afternoon was a two-part episode of the Power Rangers TV show. It is the final episode of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
[edit] Summary
- In Part One, Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa bring the Hydro Hog to Earth, putting the Aquitian's lives in danger after the Hydro Hog begins draining all the water on the Earth.
Meanwhile, Aisha arrives in Africa searching for the final sub-segment of the Zeo Crystal. While in Africa, she meets a girl named Tanya Sloan and learns of a famine affecting the land.
Back in America, Goldar and Rito Revolto have broken into the underground chambers of the Command Center, and are setting up a bomb...
- In Part Two, the young Power Rangers are able to help the Aquitians with help from an invention of Billy that allows them to summon the Falconzord and use it to form the Shogun Megafalconzord, giving the Aquitians the means of defeating their old foe once and for all. And they do.
In Africa, an elder gives Aisha the final piece of the Zeo Crystal, but being an animal expert, she decides to stay in Africa, hoping that when she is returned to her regular age, she can help with the famine. In her place, she sends Tanya with the Yellow Zeo Crystal.
As the episode closes, the Power Rangers regain their age, and Tanya decided to stay behind to be trained by Alpha 5.
But the happiness is over, when in the final minutes of the episode, the bomb set by Rito Revolto and Goldar explodes. Although Alpha teleports the Rangers out just in time, the fates of Zordon, Alpha, and Power Rangers as we know it are left in the air, as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comes to a close.
Unlike most cliffhangers, this saga did not end with a "To Be Continued" or similar tag, and no TV advertising for the next series (Power Rangers: Zeo) would appear for at least the following month.
[edit] Trivia
- This episode arc is named after Dog Day Afternoon, a movie from the 70s starring Al Pacino.
- This is the only episode in which the Shogun MegaFalconzord actually destroys a monster.
- Final appearance of: Shogunzords, the Shogun Megazord comination, the Shogun MegaFalconzord, the Falcon Ninjazord, and the original interior of the Command Center.
- The Aquitians are seen again throughout Power Rangers: Zeo a year later in 1996, and to some extent in Power Rangers in Space in 1998, Power Rangers: Time Force in 2001, Forever Red in 2002, and most recently in Power Rangers S.P.D. in 2005. Although Aisha would be mentioned again next season, she won't be seen until 2004's Legacy of Power - nine years later. And that is only in archive footage.
- Ironically, while this episode was the Falconzord's final appearance, the footage of it fighting the Hydro Hog was actually from its Japanese introduction episode.
