Hodson's Horse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hodsons Horse was a distinguished, cavalry regiment of the British Indian Army. It was raised by Colonel William Stephen Raikes Hodson during the First War of Indian Independence or the Indian Mutiny of 1857 (depending on your point of view), and exists today as the 4th Horse regiment in the Indian Army.
The force was raised as an irregular cavalry regiment to assist with putting down the rebellion/resistance, and continued as part of the British Indian Army. In 1921 the regiment was amalgamated with 10th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers and continued under various names. It officially became the 4th Horse in 1950, and is still known as Hodson's Horse unofficially.
The regiment fought at the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Cambrai in the First World War.
The regiment is now an armoured Regiment. This regiment celebrates Cambrai Day every year. This day represents the Battle of Cambrai which was without a doubt the regiment's most splendid battle.
