Hodebo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hodebo was an online game/chatroom created by Swedish company Beedo, now Chili. The web site was originally created as a 2D game. When a player joined the game, they would create an avatar for themselves and explore the island. During the player's travels, they would have the opportunity to participate in a storyline set out by the game's creators. Characters who were a part of the story would often join the chat room created for the game.

At one point in the site's history, an egg was discovered in a room known as 'Cocoons'. After some time, this egg began to move through the building it was found in, until a player captured the egg and brought it to his 'night club' in the game. The egg eventually hatched, spawning a robot known as 'Robo bob', who began attacking the players.

Robo Bob began to change all of the story characters into robotic slaves, giving them the coice of whether to join him and change their avatar to one sporting a robotic head, or whether to fight him. Eventually, the robot was destroyed by the 'girlfriend' of the player who originally captured the egg of Robo Bob. According to the game, the girl's love for the player overwhelmed the robot, destroying it.

Another trait of Hodebo was that it used 'Zapping' and 'Imprisoning' as forms of punishment. Higher-level members of the chat room could receive a 'Zap wand', similar to the operator privilege on IRC networks. This wand could be used to silence disruptive members of the chat room, or to remove them from the chat room, sending them to a 'dungeon'.

A system of collecting items on Hodebo was also introduced to the game. Players in Hodebo could collect items from online events in the game, or by buying them from machines scattered across the in-game island. These items could then be used as emoticons in the chat room.

Hodelbo was funded by advertising. However, instead of pop-up windows, the ads were incorporated into the chat. For example, if Cingular wanted to advertise, it could create a store in Hodebo's main city where players could buy in-game Cingular phones. Unfortunately, Dobedo had to close due to lack of funding, presumably not enough advertisers knew about Hodebo and the advertising was not effective.

When Hodebo was shut down, the original creators of the game, Hodebo Inc., decided to relaunch the website under the new name Chili. This new site was launched with online chatting in mind.
