[edit] History
The first games of HC Lugano were played on the frozen Lake Muzzano. The club was formally founded at a meeting in the Apollo Restaurant on February 11, 1941. Seven years after its foundation, the team left the small lake of Muzzano and moved to the Loreto quarter. The team would be evicted from Loreto because of a lack of support. 1955 found HC Lugano playing on what were, in summer, the tennis courts of the Münger bakery in Paradiso, although they would move to an artificial ice rink, the "Resega", on December 1, 1957.
Lugano have won the Swiss national title of men's hockey seven times, in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1999, 2003, 2006, and have reached the final round of the European Cup twice; in the 1986-87 and the 1990-91 seasons. They have also played the Euroleague Final-Four in 2000. Lugano is the most successful team in the Swiss league since the play-off's introduction and is the only team in Europe that was able to win a series 4-3 after a 0-3 start (against Ambrì-Piotta in 2006). During the last seasons Lugano swindled the state treasury for about $4mio, for this reason the club risks a fine of $7mio. In 2007, Lugano finished third in the European Champion's Cup.
