Ho Yeow Sun

This is a Chinese name; the family name is Ho (何).

Ho Yeow Sun (Simplified Chinese: 何耀珊; pinyin: Hé Yàoshān; born 2 June) is a Singaporean Chinese pop music singer. She is a Singapore Pop artist. She has a charting singles in the American dance music circuit.

Sun holds an M.A. degree in Counseling, and offers counselling on the radio and in magazines in China, Taiwan and Singapore. Since establishing her career as a pop artist, Sun had been involved in raising funds for various charitable organisations.

Sun is married to the Founder of City Harvest Church, Kong Hee and they have a son, Dayan.

Sun is also a fashion entrepreneur. In July 2005, Sun opened a new streetwear boutique, SKIN which carries trendy apparel and accessories from Italian and L.A. labels such as Ed Hardy, Von Dutch, Allen B, True Religion, Antik Denim and Bejeweled at The Marina Square, Singapore. Sun and her SKIN partners, after acquiring exclusive distribution for Ed Hardy in Singapore, also opened the first flagship store in Asia at The Heeren Shops, Singapore on October 29, 2005.

Currently she resides in the USA.

Sun was the first Chinese pop singer to be invited to perform at the Hollywood Film Festival 2003 and to be officially invited to the 46th Annual Grammy Awards 2004. She was also the first Chinese pop singer to be invited and asked to present at the American Dancestar Music Awards 2004. In Aug 2005, Sun was the only Asian artiste among 25 other artistes to be invited to perform at Beatstock'05 - a two-day dance festival organized by KTU, the top radio station in New York.

She is best-known in cities and countries with sizeable Chinese Christian populations or minorities. Ho won numerous musical awards, once topping the Billboard dance chart in the United States. Sun’s US debut single "Where Did Love Go" reached Number One on the American Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play "Breakout" Chart for the week ending December 22, 2003. Subsequently, three of her singles, "One With You", "Without Love" and "Gone" reached Number One positions on the US Billboard Dance Chart and the UK MusicWeek Chart.

She won the Singapore "TOYP 2002" Award for her social and community work. Thereafter, she represented Singapore for the "Outstanding Youth of the World Award" on 6th November 2003 at Denmark and won the award by the Junior Chamber International.1

  • “Leader Mentor 2004” Award

On October 29, 2004, Sun was awarded the “Leader Mentor 2004” Award at the 2nd Global Leadership and Mentoring Congress 2004 for her social work contributions in Singapore. This award is presented to ten individuals who are recognized for their contributions in mentoring and training other leaders.

  • Singapore Hit Awards 2004

On September 10, 2004, Sun was presented the “Best Selling Female Artiste of the Year” Award at the annual Singapore Hit Awards presentation organized by the Recording Industry Association of Singapore (RIAS) and Singapore’s radio station FM93.3.

  • Malaysia Hit Awards 2003

On November 15, 2003, Sun was presented the “Outstanding Female Stage Showmanship” Award at the Malaysia Hit Awards held at Genting Highlands.

  • “The Outstanding Young Person of the World 2003” Award

On November 6, 2003, Sun was the only Singaporean winner among 10 nominees to be awarded the “Outstanding Young Person of the World 2003” Award for her social work in Asia. The ceremony was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, under the auspices of Junior Chamber International. Sun is the only 4th Asian celebrity to receive the award after Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Michelle Yeoh.

  • Singapore Hit Awards 2003

On September 6, 2003, Sun was presented the “Best Selling Female Artiste of the Year” Award at the annual Singapore Hit Awards presentation organized by the Recording Industry Association of Singapore (RIAS) and Singapore’s premier radio station FM93.3. The album “Sun*day” also won the “Best Selling Album of the Year” Award at the nationally-telecast ceremony.

  • Hong Kong Metro Music Awards 2003

On August 3, 2003, Sun was presented the “Best Female Newcomer 2003” Award by the Hong Kong Metro Radio Station’s inaugural Music Award presentation. Major Chinese popstars in Asia were there and more than 10,000 fans packed the red carpet ceremony at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

  • “The Outstanding Young Person of Singapore 2002” Award

On October 5, 2002, in recognition toward Sun’s contributions to social work in Singapore, the Junior Chamber of Singapore awarded her with the “TOYP 2002” Award. This is presented annually to Singaporeans, between the ages of 21 and 40, who have done significant work in community development.

  • “First Singer To Top American Billboard Dance Chart”

In the 2006’s Singapore Book of Records, Sun was named the first singer to top the American Billboard Dance Chart. Three of her singles, “One With You”, “Without Love” and "Gone" subsequently reached Number One positions on the American Billboard Dance Chart and the UK MusicWeek Club Chart.

  • “First-Day Cover Stamp Series”

To commemorate her contribution to the China Children’s Foundation, Sun was featured specially on a First-Day Cover Stamp-series in June 2004. She is the first celebrity outside of China to be given this honour.

  • “Ambassador of Love 2004”

In appreciation of her philanthropic efforts, China Children’s Charity named Sun as “Ambassador of Love” in June 2004.

  • “Asia’s Top Movers and Shakers 2003”

Sun was featured in the December 2003/January 2004 issue of the magazine Asia Inc. as one of Asia’s “Under-50 Movers and Shakers.”

  • “Top 20 Winners’ Circle 2002”

The August 2002 issue of Singapore’s ELLE magazine honored Sun as one of the “Top 20 Individuals” instrumental in changing the lives of Singaporeans in 2002.

She has been criticised for her turnabout from being a "singing pastor" at City Harvest Church, to becoming a solely secular pop singer.[1]
