HNLMS Karel Doorman (R81)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HNLMS Karel Doorman (R81) was a Colossus-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
[edit] History
Laid down as HMS Venerable at Cammel Laird in Birkenhead on 3 December 1942, launched just over a year later, and commissioned on 17 January 1945.
In 1948, Venerable's short career in the Royal Navy came to an end, when it was sold to the Dutch. The ship recommissioned in the Dutch fleet as Karel Doorman.
During the retaken of Western New Guinea in 1962 from the Dutch, Indonesia prepared for a military action named Operation TRIKORA (in indonesian language : Tri Komando Rakyat, means The Third Command of the People). Some source said that TNI-AU (Indonesian Air Forces) planned to sink this aircraft carrier by indonesian Tupolev Tu-16KS-1 Badger using AS-1 Kennel / KS-1 Kometa anti ship missiles ( 6 planes planned to attack Karel Doorman ), but the plan cancelled as an implementation of cease-fire between Indonesia and the Netherlands. Soon, Indonesia received back their Western New Guinea from the Netherlands, after the referendum in Western New Guinea (Pepera) agreed for unification with Indonesia.
In 1969, after a boiler-room fire, she was sold to the Argentine Navy and renamed ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.
