HMS Lion (C34)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Lion was a light cruiser of the Royal Navy, ordered in 1942 as one of the Minotaur class and laid down that same year as Defence.
Partially complete, Lion was launched in 1944 but work was suspended in 1946. Construction of Defence and two other cruisers was later resumed to a revised Tiger class design. Renamed Lion in 1957, the cruiser was finally commissioned in July 1960.
Just four years into her commission, Lion was placed in reserve. Lion's conversion to a helicopter cruiser was cancelled, after which the cruiser became a parts hulk.
She was placed on the disposal list in 1972 and sold for scrap at Inverkeithing in April 1975.
See HMS Lion for other Navy ships of the name.
