HMS Intrepid (L11) was a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) of the Royal Navy built at John Brown & Co. in Scotland in the early 1960's at a cost of about £10.5 million.

She had a large floodable dock in her stern, with a large flight deck over the top. She carried 4 LCU and 4 LCVP landing craft.

[edit] Falklands

Intrepid was to be decommissioned in 1982, however the Falklands War prevented this. Intrepid sailed in the second wave of ships bound for the islands. On 19 May 1982 a Westland Sea King helicopter bound for Intrepid which was carrying SAS troops hit a flock of birds and ditched in the sea, killing 23.[1]

The ship was placed in reserve in 1991. In 1995 the government announced plans to replace Intrepid and Fearless with two new LPDs. Intrepid was decommissioned in 1999. She remained in Portsmouth Harbour until February 2007 when the government announced she was to be scrapped.[1]
