HMS Ganges
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Ganges after the river Ganges in India.
- The first Ganges was a 74-gun 3rd rate ship of the line launched in 1782 and broken up in 1816.
- The second Ganges was an 84-gun 2nd rate launched in 1821 and finally broken up in 1930. She is notable for being the last sailing ship of the Navy to serve as a flagship.
From 1906 to 1925, the name was held by various ships - the former HMS Caroline, HMS Minotaur, HMS Agincourt, and various steam launches - operating as part of the Navy training depot at RNTE Shotley, near Ipswich.
From 1927 to 1976 a Royal Navy training depot, the former RNTE Shotley, was named HMS Ganges.
