HMCS Buctouche (K179)

HMCS Buctouche was a Flower class Corvette, Penant number K-179.

Constructed by Davie Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Lauzon, PQ commencing August 14, 1940, and launched November 20, 1940. She served the Royal Canadian Navy from June 5, 1941 through June 15, 1945. She performed convoy escort duties in the North Atlantic.

The fierce weather conditions would lead to heavy icing on the superstructure, railings and rigging. This demanded that the crew chop the ice in order to prevent the vessel from capsizing. Her logo crest showed Hitler being tossed off a bucking bronco, a play being made both on the name "Buctouche" and the rolling pitching motion which these vessels were renowned for.
