HMAS Huon (naval base)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HMAS Huon, previously known as HMS Huon, was the home naval base for Tasmania's colonial Navy prior to Federation in 1901. Following federation, the base came under the control of the Royal Australian Navy. A drill hall was added following federation. It served as an important training centre and home dock for a number of small naval vessels until the base was de-commissioned in 1994. The oldest remaining buildings date from 1912-13.

HMAS HUON is a prominent building on the western shoreline of the Derwent River in Hobart. It is slightly uphill from a major slipway and boat yard and is located next to the Royal Hobart Regatta grounds.
