Hloupý Honza

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hloupý Honza (Hloupý means dull, Honza is personal name — i.e. Silly Jack) is a fictional figure from many Czech fairy-tales from the 19th century.

Hloupý Honza is a lazy and inept son of village farmers. He is good for nothing, so his parents send him to the world to take care of himself. On his way, he meets seemingly impossible obstacles but outsmarts them all and returns back home with fame, riches and a princess as his wife. Suddenly he is not viewed as dull.

Such figures are often suggested as mirroring the national character of Czechs (the nation had unexpectedly risen up, from low classes, struggling against all odds to establish itself and independent entity).
