HKZ

Begun in August 2005, HKZ is an hour-long weekly podcast devoted to featuring avant-garde, experimental, and new music by undiscovered, rarely discovered or lesser-known artists and bands. In each episode, one artist and/or album is featured by playing about four or five tracks. Each selection is accompanied by explanatory "liner-note" material, such as a biography of the artist or band, the inspiration for the track, a send-up of the art on the release, and the like. The featured material usually gets a little more background information provided, pulled from reliable sources or the releases themselves.

Hosted by J. Everett R., the show is reportedly based on CBC Radio 2's radio show Brave New Waves, hosted by Patti Schmidt. Those familiar with Brave New Waves will hear the resemblance when they listen to HKZ. HKZ's host's name is a take on the common practice of official naming, as in "John Q. Public", but instead, the first and last names have been abbreviated and the middle name given in full.

Past features of artists and bands have included Les Georges Leningrad, OOIOO, Hanne Hukkelberg, Venetian Snares, LIARS, The Dirty Projectors, and for the September 19, 2005, episode, the documentary by Braden King entitled "Looking For A Thrill" was featured with interview clips from Ian MacKaye of Fugazi and Minor Threat and James McNew from Yo La Tengo, to name a few.
