Public domain
This image is in the public domain in the United States. In most cases, this means that it was first published in the United States prior to January 1, 1923 (see the PD-US talk page for more cases). Its copyright has also expired in those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 50 years.

image created prior to WWI

That's not enough, it has to have been published before 1923 to be in the public domain. And to be really sure it has to have been published in the United States. Haukur 08:42, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
Define "published". If it was created and shown around, then it might as well have been published. Moreover, I doubt Hitler has much of an estate remaining. Furthermore, the US recognizes German/Austrian copyright rules if the work was made in Germany/Austria, doesn't it? — Rickyrab | Talk 20:01, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Wait a minute, the work was made in Austria-Hungary. I thought that was an extinct country. — Rickyrab | Talk 20:05, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
If it was created and shown around, then it might as well have been published. Well, was it? That's claimed nowhere, for all I know it was forgotten in an attic for decades. Hitler's works are still in copyright (see Mein Kampf for some information). Haukur 20:28, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
