[edit] Rugby union project
There's a Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby union that you probably don't know about. The league equivalent is working quite nicely but the union one only has five participants. So I'm leaving messages on the talk pages of the main contributors. You don't have to sign up but your contribution would be welcomed.GordyB 11:03, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll think about it.--Historian 22:23, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Jho Sho Maru
Hi Historian, I was looking for images of the Jho Sho Maru, for your article on Thomas Blake Glover. It seems that it is a commerce ship rather than an ironclad. Do you have more references on the subject? Best regards. PHG 22:25, 28 January 2006 (UTC) Image of the Jho Sho Maru
- Hello. It was a warship, built in Aberdeen and launched in March 1869, later renamed Ryūjō Maru. --Historian 12:58, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
-
- Hi Historian. I created a page for Jho Sho Maru. Are you sure she was a warship? (I cannot find a reference to her in the Imperial Japanese Navy books I have (including Japanese ones), nor on the Internet). Best regards. PHG 22:04, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- I have added my source to the page you have made. If it turns out to be wrong, sorry! --Historian 22:23, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Categories
Please stop placing things in multiple categories, when one category is a subcategory of the other.
Wikipedia Category Help has the guideline for this. If every train station in Japan was listed in the Category:Railway stations in Japan category, it would be huge. That is why they are separated into prefectures. Neier 12:38, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sure it would be huge, but also hugely useful I believe. If the wiki-servers have the capacity to accommodate them technically, I can't see a "huge problem". At least the main stations (e.g. Kokura station) should appear in the top category I think. --Historian 23:48, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tim Lane
Can you explain that the Tim Lane who was a Japanese rugby union coach is the Tim Lane? I'd like some more details on it thanks. Cheers, Rogerthat Talk
[edit] Master of Arts (Scotland)
Yes you are correct that there exists other undergradute Master of Arts degrees - now we have an issue with a very long bracket which doesn't conform with Wikipedia naming conventions and a page that is now in need of serious cleanup. Unless you object I am going to split the page in two - and re-create Master of Arts (Scotland) as a page just about Scotland and then create a page on Master of Arts (England) which might provide a way that would allow this to make sense. Thanks for the idea and it is time to improve it by making a Master of Arts (Postgraduate) page and then a Master of Arts (disambiguation) page. Davidkinnen 13:22, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] SCOWNB
Many thanks for your contributions to the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board. If you don't mind I am going to move your latest contribution from the Announcements section to the relevant subpages, eg. /new categories. I am way behind with notice board maintenance (it needs a good clean-out of old business), so maybe you have just promted me to get my finger out.
Not sure about that new cat, but all these types of cats are in their infancy, so a Wikipedia-wide standard is still a while away. But at first sight it does rather seem to be a duplicate of the well-established Category:Scottish emigrants, although I conced that the focus is different (not that the title makes that clear).--Mais oui! 13:54, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, and ta for initiating that Brunton article. And congrats on the Barnstar.--Mais oui! 13:57, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

- Merci beaucoup! --Historian 13:59, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image tagging
You tagged Image:Caius shield.png as "PD-old" on the grounds that "it dates back hundreds of years". I'm sure that the blazon of the college's coat of arms dates back that far, but is this particular depiction of the coat of arms that old? --Carnildo 03:16, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- My dear Carnildo. I don't know is the short answer. But since the coat of arms is made up of the arms of Edmund Gonville who founded Gonville Hall in 1348 (left side) and John Caius who refounded the College to make Gonville and Caius College in 1557 (right side), I should say it's highly probable that the author of "this particular depiction" (however defined) died more than 100 years ago, wouldn't you? Unless you are going to say that the image is only as old as digital image scanning, in which case all digitally scanned images should be removed from wikipedia forthwith - a rather ridiculous conclusion don't you think? If you have an alternative suggestion for a tagging please let me know what it is, so I can keep this image out of reach of your bot! Thank you. --Historian 07:31, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
- I suggest you read up on coat of arms and blazon. Basically, the canonical form of a coat of arms is the blazon: the text description of the arms. This is what is provided when a person or group is granted arms. There are infinitely many possible ways of depicting a blazon, and each new depiction establishes its own copyright. Image:Caius shield.png could have been created in 1557, or it could have been created last year. Without a source, there's no way of knowing. Further, since it's quite possible for an artistic Wikipedian to create their own depiction of the blazon, there's no fair-use claim for a coat of arms. --Carnildo 08:06, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
- I see. So your suggestion for tagging the image in a satisfactory way is what exactly? And by the way, it seems to me that several of the other Cambridge college coat of arms images have been created by User:Lupin, or so he says. That is OK with you and (perhaps more importantly) your bot User:OrphanBot is it? --Historian 08:28, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- The images created by User:Lupin are just fine. Since he drew them (presumably based on the approprate blazons), he's got copyright on them, and can release them under the GFDL or whatever other license he wants. I'd suggest finding the official text description of the arms, then asking someone like Lupin or me to draw up the arms. If nothing else, the resulting image will be more legible than the current one. --Carnildo 21:46, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
I just found a very useful link with the blazons of each cambridge college, and thought you may be interested. Mlm42 22:33, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you, yes it is very useful! --Historian 07:09, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
Hi Historian. As a Caian, who lived in Japan, married to a Japanese, and as a Wikipedian who is also struggling against probably the world's most annoying bot, I thought I would say hello! Gsd2000 14:18, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- Hello to you!! It's a small world after all...;-) That bot is an orphan and of dubious parentage. (Nice to meet you!) --Historian 22:25, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] More Info On Alexander Cameron Simm
Hi Historian. Noticed that you had a page about Alexander Cameron Simm born in Aberlour, Scotland 28th August 1840. Do you know anything else about him? I live in Aberlour and I'm currently researching a new village history (having only discovered Wikipedia. I've never heard of Alexander Cameron Simm (and the surname isn't known in the area) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Norlaggan (talk • contribs).
- Hello! But who are you? You did not sign your message! --Historian 03:51, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I am from Canada and am researching the McKerron family of Knockside Aberlour. There is a connection with the Sim family. Please contact me rmckerron@cogeco.ca
Thanks Bob McKerron Oakville, Ontario, Canada
[edit] Why is it called Orphanbot?
(transferred by Carnildo from his talk page)
Would it not be better to take responsibility for this bot (if it is indeed your brainchild) and call it, say, "Carnildobot"? --Historian 08:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I believe in naming bots after what they do, not after who owns them. Originally, OrphanBot was designed for one task: orphaning no-source and no-license images so admins could delete them easily. Notifying users and other related tasks have been added since then. --Carnildo 18:56, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
I see. Well, one of the things that this bot does is cause widespread irritation, so "Irritatingbot" might be a better name. You certainly seem to have an uphill struggle to win over/educate those wikipedians whose image contributions made in good faith have been affected by it! --Historian 00:49, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Otago Highlanders
Hi Historian, I was just browsing WikiProject:Rugby Union and saw that you are a Highlanders fan. I just wanted to let you know of the existence of the Category:Users who support the Otago Highlanders (which is sadly underpopulated) and the associated Highlanders userbox. You might be interested in adding one or both of these to your userpage. Blarneytherinosaur 00:43, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. I have added one of them, can't remember which! --Historian 23:27, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Kitakyushu
Why template has been removed? I think the layout could be fixed but it should be kept, it's very useful.
- Because it looked a total mess after people/bots had interfered with it! Who are you by the way? --Historian 02:48, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
-
- I believe you are right about the mess that some bots can do, anyways I found the informations in template to be very useful, in fact I used them for the italian stub about Kitakyushu. Sorry I don't have any english wikipedia user page because my english is far from perfect (and because of lazyness too), anyways i'm staying in Kytakyushu for some weeks and trying to take some decent photos. --125.29.1.143 05:08, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I have restored the template. But two images in it have been removed by Orphanbot. --Historian 10:39, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] National Archives
The National Archives cannot possibly be the "National" Archives of the UK, because Scotland has its own National Archives (and many would contend that the UK is a state (a political organisation), not a nation (a cultural attribute)). It could be moved to National Archives (England and Wales), but that is pedantic, and thoroughly contrary to disambiguation practice here at Wikipedia: see William III of England for example: he was not the 3rd of Scotland, and we don't dab using William III of England, Scotland and Ireland, even though that is more accurate. --Mais oui! 07:53, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well for that matter I think it should never have changed from Public Record Office and Historical Manuscripts Commission which were its better-named predecessors. If you look at the web page of the organization it describes itself (unhelpfully) as "The National Archives" and states that it holds the "records of the UK government from Domesday to the present". If you just call it "National Archives" that is too wide and invites confusion with the USA etc., but "National Archives (England)" or "National Archives (England and Wales)" don't sound right to me either. To me "National Archives (UK)" is the least bad option. But it is a mess. --Historian 14:05, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Felice Beato
I just wanted to check with you that this reference that you added to the Beato article is correct:
- Dobson, Sebastian. "'I been to keep up my position': Felice Beato in Japan, 1863-1877", in Reflecting Truth: Japanese Photography in the Nineteenth Century, ed. Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere, Mikiko Hirayama (Amsterdam: Hotei Publishing, 2004)
because that title, "'I been to keep up my position': Felice Beato in Japan, 1863-1877" is pretty strange, and in searching various resources I couldn't find it (though I did find Reflecting Truth...). Assuming the title is right, though, I guess it's a quote from Beato, who was known by his British contemporaries for his "amusing" manner of speaking ("I am delight!"). Pinkville 17:56, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
- I have this book. It is correct. See also p. 8 of this pdf document. Regards, --Historian 03:21, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- Just got a copy of it as well! Thanks for the (inadvertant but welcome) tip! Pinkville 01:29, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fair-use image removed from your gallery
Hello, Historian. I've removed Image:Inagaki Manjiro.JPG from your image gallery and replaced it with a link to the image, as it is a copyrighted image that is being used under a claim of fair use. Unfortunately, by Wikipedia policies, no fair-use images can be used on user pages; please see Wikipedia:Removal of fair use images. If you have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 15:25, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well done! I'm sure you are right about the rule, but I wish you would just not fiddle uselessly with things, or if you really must then please don't tell me. --Historian 00:10, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Chinese categories
I left some notes to the person who was changing my work as he wanted a different set of categories than I did. I will see how that discussion proceeds. My work was to have a 'people' category for foreign diplomats, military assigned to China; an expatriate category for visitors and long term foreign residents of China; and a citizenship category in those cases where people became citizens of China. This is how 'foreigners' in other countries are organized so I did not see why China should be an exception. This organiztion works not only to distinguish people in the destination country, but also to to distinguish them in their origin country. Thanks Hmains 03:32, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland
Following a successful period of consultation WikiProject Scotland has now been launched. As a participant in the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board I wonder if you may be interested in this new endeavour too? If so, please sign-up here. The WikiProject will be replacing some of the functions of the notice board, especially those in the lower half.
While I am here, please also have a look at the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Scotland and give it a "Watch". It was started up by User:Visviva a few days ago, after long being mooted at the notice board, and effectively replaces all the AfD listings at the notice board. Being a transclusion of all the on-going discussions it is a much more useful tool.
Even if you do not want to spend too much time on the WikiProject, please give it a "Watch" and feel free to contribute to Talk page discussions: the more contributors the merrier.
All the best. --Mais oui! 11:35, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Rugby
Hi Historian, I know from the rugby project that you have a good knowledge on Japanese rugby, recently a user added a team template to all the Top League teams, but as far as I know most of the away jerseys were left as unknown. The templates added were a little outdated, as there is now template:rugby team which has optional information and is thinner. I added the new template for the Suntory club, but I just wanted to ask you if this is the correct away jersey? Cheers. Cvene64 20:08, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Cvene64
I am honestly not sure. I have only seen Suntory playing in the yellow jersey this season, and there are no colour clashes that I know of in the Top League. Cheers --Historian 22:49, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Ok. Thanks for letting me know. I might hold off adding it in until I can find anything out. Cheers. Cvene64 00:10, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Tobata Gion Yamagasa festival
Hello! I would like to just ask you if you have any knowledge of how the Tobata Gion Yamagasa is related to the much older festival, Hakata Gion Yamagasa matsuri? Just got curious as I have taken part twice to the Hakata Yamagasa and happened to found the Tobata Yamagasa article made by you. --Ningyou 21:29, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

- I don't think they are related. --Historian 22:48, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Noticed you edited my Ryan Nicholas page, you said that he has changed his mind and decided to stay in Japan, as a massive Reds fan this is the first i have heard of it.. Can you please confirm it as i am involved in a forum with many other union fans who will be interested in the answer.
