What was the development history for IE7? My understanding & reading led me to believe it was rather advanced even by the time IE6 was released and was supposedly going to be a supremely compatible system, and that the project was all but abandoned shortly thereafter, either to be picked up latter and turned into IE7 or just forgotten. Surely there must have been something between 2000 release of IE6 and 2005 release betas of IE7! Whats in this HUGE 5 year gap?

Didn't a service pack for Windows 2000 install IE6? I didn't see any mention in the table.
