Good start. And it seems you managed quite well to make the distinction between the city of Berne, focussing more of the city development here, and the canton of Berne, which would be the right place to discuss the territorial expansion of the city state and the political machinations that went with it. For this article, a map showing the successive stages of the expansion of the city (Zytglogge/Käfigturm/Christoffelturm, and then 19th century Länggasse and slightly later Breitenrain; don't know about Kirchenfeld, 20th century: Bümpliz, Bethlehem, agglomeration) would be nice. The big fire started on May 14, 1405. The full text of the Berner Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Heimatkunde is available online; pre-1997 issues are a nightmare to navigate (not searchable), but it's still a great resource if you can read German. We do have an article of Vogt; maybe it's a better term than sheriff in this context. The peasant war of 1653 deserves its own article; Bauernkrieg (1653) in German, French or Italian in the online Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. and [1] might be useful resources for that article.
