[edit] Summary

This image depicts a chronological series of actual and replica sets of the board game Monopoly. At the top is a replica of the 1935 "Number 9" Deluxe edition of the game, from the first year it was sold by Parker Brothers. The second row, left, is a set released in 2001, but with artwork replicated from a 1957 edition of the game. The second row, right, is an original set from 1964. The bottom row, left, is a 1999 set, released after the introduction of the "sack of money" as the first new token for the board game's standard edition since the 1950s. The bottom row, right, is the 70th anniversary edition (2005) for the United States.

This photograph was taken on 16 August 2006 by John D. Buell, using Monopoly sets from the Buell Family collection. The artwork on all five of the game boxes uses trademarks belonging to Parker Brothers/Hasbro and the copyrights are held by that firm.

[edit] Fair use rationale

The photograph, set at a low resolution, and uploaded in an inferior graphics format (JPEG) depicts actual sets, or replicas of sets, of the board game Monopoly, showing the evolution of the game's artwork and design from 1935-2005. While this artwork is copyrighted, it is not believed that its use in the article History of the board game Monopoly will infringe on the copyright holders, Parker Brothers/Hasbro, as such use is for educational and informational purposes only.
