[edit] 1967 National Elections "Halalan '67"

ABS-CBN conducted the first marathon coverage of the country's elections through Halalan '67. It also inaugurated Asia's biggest and best-equipped broadcast complex (1968).

[edit] 1969 Apollo 11 Moon Landing

ABS-CBN made the Philippines' first live transmission of a world event (via satellite) by broadcasting the historic Apollo 11 moon expedition, with Neil Armstrong as the first man on the moon.

The station covered the collapse of the Ruby Tower during the deadly earthquake in Manila in 1968. Microwave transmission was done from a multi-cam outside broadcast van (OB van), then the first of its kind in Asia.

In this coverage, ABS-CBN become the "eye" of the Filipinos during this historic election (the first presidential elections after the 1986 EDSA Revolution. ABS-CBN acquired the broadcast rights to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain when the government-owned TV station, PTV-4 (now NBN) was unable to fulfill its commitment. This broadcast gave the network a competitive edge in covering international sports events.

ABS-CBN won the rights to host and cover the 1994 Miss Universe pageant, which was telecast to the whole world live from the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila, thus giving the station international exposure.

ABSCBN leads for the nationwide successful anti-nuclear barrage which will test in the Pacific which the Philippines is also on one the countries in the Pacific Rim that would be affected.

[edit] 1995 Southeast Asian Total Solar Eclipse coverage

ABS-CBN also provided live footages and reports in the Southern Philippines for the total solar eclipse of 1995. However, expectations were not met because of cloudy skies and bad weather conditions prevailing in the area.

Together with government-owned PTV-4 (now NBN)), ABS-CBN was named official broadcaster of the celebrations for the Philippine Independence Centennial.

Eugenio Lopez, Jr. died on that year. ABS-CBN commemorates all of its contributions to ABS-CBN and to all people for trusting his ambitious goal, ABS-CBN "In the Service of the Filipino".

[edit] 2000-2001 Impeachment Trial of Former President Estrada

ABS-CBN pre-empted its regular late-afternoon programming to cover the historic impeachment trial of former President Joseph Estrada. ABS-CBN News Channel also provided a thorough and uncut coverage of the impeachment.

ABS-CBN broadcasted live the World Millennium Day Celebrations in different parts of the world in partnership with The Filipino Channel, CNN and Reuters, and also the leading tv networks in the world such as NBC, FOX and CBS in USA, NHK and TV Asahi in Japan, Nine Network in Australia, BBC and ITV in United Kingdom, CCTV in China, Televisa and Telemundo in Latin Americas and other countries. It also covered the Philippine Millennium Day Celebrations at the Expo Filipino in Clark, Pampanga and the major key cities in the Philippines.

[edit] 2001 EDSA Dos

ABS-CBN provided a blow-by-blow account of what is said to be the second people power revolution, which was triggered by the failure of the Senate to open the second envelope that could have served as proof to Estrada's guilt. On January 16, 2001, ABS-CBN did not sign-off to continue covering the formation of groups at EDSA Shrine. For 5 days, ABS-CBN pre-empted majority of its regular daily programming to give way to the events at EDSA.

[edit] 2001 Labor Day attacks live coverages

Despite the criticisms of the masses who rallied at EDSA to give support to former President Estrada against the media, ABS-CBN continued to cover the rally and the foiled rebellion to the Palace. At the height of the May 1, 2001 rally, the masses burst their anger and picked on certain media entities, including ABS-CBN. A pick-up car of the station was destroyed by a group of rallyists that were said to be under the influence of drugs.

ABS-CBN covers blow-by-blow updates of Midterm Elections in the Philippines, with conducted of votes made possible in partnership with STI and The Philippine Star as the major media sponsors.

[edit] 2001 New York 9/11 Terrorist Attacks coverages

ABS-CBN North America News Bureau had its own eyewitness acount of the 9/11 terrorist attack at Manhattan, New York, USA. Aside from the feeds from the foreign press, ABS-CBN became the very first Filipino eye at New York, reporting to the Philippines the state of the Filipinos who died and were injured from the collapse of the Twin Towers. The News Team of the USA Bureau also gathered testimonies from Filipino and American witnesses.

As a Kapamilya, the funeral of Nida Blanca was fully coverage in the entire Philippines with ABS-CBN. It is considered as the biggest funeral coverage ever seen.

The network covered the funeral of Rico Yan, a contract star of the network. It posted reporters at the chapel, strategic routes along the funeral's way, and at the Manila Memorial Park. The network even used the SkyPatrol helicopter.

ABS-CBN was the last Asian broadcaster to remain covering the US-Iraq war, together with Reuters and CNN. However, the network pulled out the news team two weeks after staying for nearly a month after series of severe bombings in Baghdad.

ABS-CBN, courtesy of Ces Orena-Drilon, was ahead in terms of providing context on the news that threatened the government's security. Ces was always ahead of the other media personalities in getting exclusive interviews from the Magdalo. Even before the actual press conference of the Magdalo Group, Ces was able to interview the group and ask for their sentiments c/o Antonio Trillanes.

ABS-CBN was consistent of being in the service of the Filipino by covering the most anticipated political exercise in the Philippines. ABS-CBN, together with Social Weather Stations, also continued the conduct of Exit Polls, the objective of which is to get a glimpse as to who are the candidates that the citizens voted. ABS-CBN covered several major precints, and even reported election-related crimes that occurred.

[edit] Angelo Dela Cruz' Rescue and Arrival

ABS-CBN was able to provide the most accurate eyewitness account of the hostage scenario involving Angelo Dela Cruz, an OFW, in Iraq. With the help of its Middle East News Bureau, the country was informed with Dela Cruz' situation, negotiation efforts of the government, and the peace and order situation in Iraq. When the negotiations between the hostage takers and the government became successful, ABS-CBN, through TV Patrol and TFC, allowed Angelo Dela Cruz to communicate via Satellite from Iraq to his family in the Philippines. ABS-CBN was also the only TV station that was able to cover the arrival of Angelo Dela Cruz. The video of the arrival became controversial when GMA-7, through its Flash Report, aired the same video, even featuring ABS-CBN's reporter Dindo Amparo. The controversial video lead to the legal showdown of ABS-CBN and GMA.

[edit] 2004 Fernando Poe Jr. funeral coverage

Such coverage became one of the most controversial events in the Philippine Broadcast Media. During the first day of FPJ's wake at Sto. Domingo Church, Susan Roces, wife of Mr. Poe, shouted live at TV Patrol World her disappointments towards ABS-CBN for having a biased coverage of the 2004 Presidential Elections and for capitalizing on personal hurt. Karen Davila, TV Patrol anchor who was doing the interview with Roces, burst into tears and apologized in behalf of ABS-CBN for all the hurt that Roces felt. Karen was summoned by ABS-CBN Management and was almost suspended.

[edit] 2006 Pacquiao-Morales 2

On January 22, 2006, ABS-CBN and DZMM aired for the first time the second part of the trilogy of the rivalry in the world of boxing between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales. The station also managed to get exclusive rights to cover the training of both boxers, as well as the rights for post-fight interviews and guestings.

On February 4, 2006, the top rated noontime show Wowowee celebrating its 1st year anniversary. Thousands of people most women arrived outside the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. But around 6 in the morning, 71 people died and some other injured due to stampede. ABS-CBN covers tranparent report on the worse case scenario.

[edit] 2006 Mount Everest expedition

On May 17, 2006, ABS-CBN's hourly news bulletin, News Patrol, was the first to broadcast through a live satellite feed from Mount Everest base camp that the ABS-CBN sponsored First Philippine Everest Team member Leo Oracion have already reached the summit of the mountain.

The expedition was financed in part by the network.

On July 2, 2006, ABS-CBN was the official broadcaster of the Pacquiao-Larios bout which was held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Manny Pacquiao Productions gave the exclusive telecast rights of the fight after the successful broadcast partnership with Solar Sports of the Pacquiao vs. Morales fight. The fight was shown an hour delayed on the terrestrial television but was shown live over pay-per-view via SkyCable locally. The Fight Was Never shown on The Filipino Channel.

That event garnered the second highest rating in the Philippine TV history, with a 65.7% (with a reach of 82.8% nationwide) and the highest audience share of 96 to 99% based on the latest AGB Survey in Mega Manila defeating the rating of Pacquiao-Morales II fight which garnered 58.7% and Esperanza with a 58.1% rating. ABS-CBN is the only Filipino news team currently staying in different points in Lebanon and Israel. The news coverage is a combined effort of the parent company's overseas news bureaus - ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau (News Bureau Chief Dindo Amparo) and ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau (News Bureau Chief Danny Buenafe).

[edit] 2006 Sino ang Tatapos? Pacquaio vs. Morales 3

ABS-CBN once again was given the rights to air the Finale of the trilogy of the boxing duel of Manny Pacquaio and Erik Morales. Aired on November 19, 2006, it garnered Mega-Manila ratings of 49.9 as reported by AGB Nielsen Media Research, making it the third most watched sports event in Philippine TV History.

ABS-CBN will be the official broadcaster for the first Filipino woman to climb the peak of Mount Everest.

ABS-CBN's Halalan 2007 was the biggest, largest and most comprehensive election coverage this coming May 2007 elections. ABS-CBN also the first in Philippine TV to make an interactive through mobile phones. Major partners to make this Halalan 2007 coverage made possible with STI, The Philippine Star and Globe Telecom, together with PulseAsia, Social Weather Station and PPCRV. Other affiliates to make this Halalan 2007 much larger coverages with ABSCBN Affiliates such as ABS-CBN News Channel, The Filipino Channel, DZMM, ABS-CBN Interactive, ABS-CBN Now, ABS-CBN News.com, PinoyCentral and Studio 23.
