From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Historical Museum Basel is one of the largest and most important museums of its kind in Switzerland. The main part of the museum is located in the Barfüsserkirche (literally:Naked Feet Church) in the centre of Basel.

The Historical Museum Basel has one of the largest cultural-historical collections of the area and the display area covers 6,200 square meters.

The museum is managed by the canton Basel-City. Although it started to develop in the 19th century, its origins lie with the family of Amerbach in the 16th century.

The museum is divided into four buildings, three of which are situated within the city Basel, with another one lying somewhat outside it.
