Hilton Head Preparatory School

Hilton Head Preparatory School (HHP) is a private school for grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, located in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It belongs to the South Carolina Independent Schools Association. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools. It is the only school on Hilton Head Island to be accredited by the National Association of Independent Schools. Its enrollment for the 2006-2007 school year was 450 students. Over fifty percent of the faculty hold advanced degrees in their subject area.[1]

Hilton Head Prep is located on Hilton Head Island, which has a population of approximately 34,000.[2] The school is located on 8 Fox Grape Road, just outside of the Ocean Gate into Sea Pines Resort.[3]

Hilton Head Prep's Mission Statement reads: "Hilton Head Preparatory School seeks to educate college-bound students in a safe environment. Instilling personal integrity is central to our educational purpose. We strive to prepare a diverse population of qualified students for academic challenges, for a successful college experience, and for rewarding lives."[4]

Hilton Head Prep offers educational opportunities for all students. All core classes have Honors and College Prep classes with the former being more difficult. The Upper School also offers 12 Advanced Placement courses. In Middle School, students are required to take one trimester of P.E. each year.[5]

The school day is comprised of seven 47-minute periods with three minutes in between classes, a 30-minute break, a thirty-minute lunch, and a forty-minute eighth period for clubs. The school day is shortened on Fridays, with 42-minute periods and no lunch or eighth period.

[edit] Weighted GPA

Grade Point Averages, expressed on both a hundred-point scale and the 4.0 SC Uniform Grading Scale, are determined by averaging the weighted final grade for each course completed in the high school. In calculating the GPA, Advanced Placement courses are weighted five points and Honors courses three points above the grade recorded on the transcript. Only courses taken at Hilton Head Prep are included in the GPA.[1]

The athletic program at Prep has greater than 75% participation of the student body with many student-athletes participating in multiple sports. The athletic department is led by Athletic Director Kenny Conroy, an active member of the PGA of America since 1986.[6] The Prep Booster Club led by Prep parents, also actively supports the athletic program.[7]

Rivals:Hilton Head Christian-hisotically in basketball,recently in football,and a minor rivalry in all other sports.
