Hillside Engineering Group is an engineering group based in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is a trading division of Toll NZ. Most of the work the company does is related to Toll, however they also do some work for the marine industry in Dunedin.

[edit] History

The company was founded as the Hillside workshops of the New Zealand Railways Department in 1901, although workshops had existed in Dunedin since the 1870s. The workshops were extensively enlarged in the late 1920s, and by 1935 employed 800 workers compared with 365 workers in 1925. At that stage, they were the largest railway workshops in the South Island, covering 16 acres. The Second World War intervened however, and by 1945 staff numbers had been cut to 550 workers.
