The hybrid U. × hollandica Hillieri arose from a chance seedling at Hillier's Pitt Corner nursery near Winchester, England, in 1918. It was a graceful, compact, slow-growing miniature tree or shrub, with weeping branches, rarely exceeding 1.2 m in height. The small leaves turned crimson and yellow in favourable autumns.
