Hillbilly Matt Darlin began his pro-wrestling career under a mask as the Russian Assassin. While working as The Assassin, he won the UCW Tag Team Championship with his partner, The Assassin II, when his manager, Hollywood Jess, interfered in the match. His title rein was short lived when he was defeated by "Sexxyboy" lance and Jonathon McMurry just 2 weeks later.

After numerous matches under the management of Hollywood Jess in which Jess's interference would cost him the match, The Assassin was convinced by "Pappy" Darlin, who had just lost his wrestler due to a contract dispute, to turn on Jess. Finally, in 2000, The Assassin, with Pappy's help, turned on Hollywood and his partner while in a return match with Lance and Jonathon. The Russian Assassin unmasked and left the building. The next week, Pappy Darlin introduced Hillbilly Matt Darlin to the UCW fans! 3 weeks later, Matt captured the UCW Heavyweight title by winning a battleroyal. Matt held the title for two months but lost it to "Big" Joey D, with Hollywood's help.

After working with several area promotions, Matt retired after suffering an injury in a match in 2003. Matt has made a few appearances since his retirement, but he has never been able to recover from his injuries.
