I removed General Wainright as I could find no evidence that the Highland Park he lived in was this Highland Park, as opposed to others. If there is a source for this information he should obviously be added back in and linked to his page on Wikipedia. Barkeep49 16:42, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

General Wainwright is restored based on the following sources. U.S. Federal Census 1900 shows General Wainwright living at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Highland Park (Illinois) NEWS, Thursday, April 9, 1942, has a cover photo of Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainright (sic) with his Elm Place (Highland Park) grammar school graduating class of 1897. Cited in Schultz, HERO OF BATAAN, page 15, "Young Jonathan Wainwright...fifteen years old when the war began and a student at Deerfield Township High School in Highland Park, Illinois, near Fort Sheridan, where his father was stationed...." One could argue that living at Fort Sheridan is not the same as living in Highland Park, but his attendance at local schools indicates an involvement in the community.

I believe a mention of the the study of Jewish Identity in the 1957-58 with follow up study in 1968-1970, that gives an indepth picture of Highland Park should be mentioned: Marshall Sklare and Joseph Greenbaun's Jewish Identity on the Suburban Frontier. University of Chicago Press (1960, 2nd edition: 1979). The study is obsensively of a town called "Lakeville" but it is clearly Highland Park, Ill, the "Gilden Ghetto" of Jews. The study was financed by the American Jewish Committee.

Julius Rosenwald, the partner of Sears aka (Sears Department Stories) was a resident near turn of century. His estate on the lake was donated to city and is now Rosenwood (wald-wood) Beach, at the the foot of Roger Williams. He is the person reputed to have broken the "color line" that allowed highland park, unlike all other cities on the up-scale North Shore to allow Jews to buy homes there thru the 1960's. Sorry, no documentation for this- just a story from one resident to another in the 1960's. A Hirsch, resident from 1954-1979.

Julius Rosenwald, President of Sears, Roebuck, and Company moved to Highland Park in 1911. His estate is now Rosewood Park and Beach. One of the earliest Jewish residents of Highland Park, Moses Moses, owner of the North-Western store, lived in the community as early as the 1860s. Isaac Goldberg had a home and business in Highland Park in the 1890s. Nathan Leopold and others pre-date Rosenwald in Highland Park. Puts the notion of a "color line" in some doubt.

I don't know the criteria for external links, but HPUnderground seems problematic to me. JJ 13:17, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

The toaster bread crum tray had to be invented before 1988!

[edit] Highland Park IL form of government

I happen to live in Highland Park. It has a city council and a mayor. Mr Belsky is the mayor not the president. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.13.235.23 (talk) 05:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC).
