The Belvidere Oasis

A highway oasis is a type of service plaza that is found in the United States of America along the interstate highways that are toll roads. Unlike other rest stops, these areas are full service. Federal regulations forbid commercial development at rest areas on toll-free interstates; only toll roads can offer services to the public[citation needed]. (One toll-free road in Kentucky has a service area that was grandfathered because it was built when its associated highway was a toll road.) The oases in Illinois have gas stations, fast food restaurants, and other various stores. Six of those oases in Illinois are unusual in that they are built directly over the interstate highway.
