Highland Railway F Class

The Highland Railway F Class 4-4-0s were introduced in 1874. The first 10 were built by Dübs & co. A further seven were built in Lochgorm works between 1876 and 1888.

They featured 6 feet 3 inch driving wheel and weighed 41 tons. The original batch had boilers pressed to 140 lb per square inch, the later batch had slightly smaller boilers but a higher pressure (150 lb/sq inch).

Of typical Allan/Jones appearance they had outside cylinders.

The first 10 were numbered 60 to 69 and originally named as follows:

    60     Bruce
    61     Sutherlandshire
    62     Perthshire
    63     Inverness-shire
    64     Morayshire
    65     Nairnshire
    66     Ross-shire
    67     The Duke
    68     Caithness-shire
    69     The Lord Provost

All later had one other name, No 62 changed name three times.

The second batch were originally as follows:

     4     Ardross
    71     Clachnacuddin
    72     Bruce
    73     Thurlow
    74     Beaufort
    75     Breadalbane
    84     Dochfour


No 71 was broken up in 1915, the rest survived into 1919 but had gone by 1947.
