[edit] Chess Team

Current Junior (2006-2007) Ben Marmont (ranked 27th in the nation for his age group)[3] leads the team followed shortly by junior Nate Cromer (uscf 1494 rating), winning the 2005 AIA State Individual Chess Championship last year.[citation needed] The team scored a notable victory over rival Gilbert this year in the Alhambra Invitational, marking the first time in many years that Highland has been able to beat Gilbert in chess.[citation needed]

[edit] Music Program

Highland High School's music program received national recognition when the Highland Marching Band marched in two nationally televised parades: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, under the direction of Nate Cromer, in November of 2004,[4] and the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's day in 2001. Other accomplishments include marching in the Disneyland Light Parade (2000) and in the Fiesta Bowl Parade and National Band Championship Competition (1999). The school's Marching Band frequently receives ratings of Superior With Distinction[5] in Arizona festivals and often travels out-of-state to California and Nevada to compete in ranked competitions.[6] The Highland High School Concert Choir traveled to New York City in March of 2007 to perform at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop as part of the National High School Choral Festival.[7]

[edit] Robotics Team

Highland High now has its own official FIRST Robotics team, The 39th AeroSquadron (team 39). In previous years it had been partnered with two other schools (Desert Ridge High School and Queen Creek High School). Their team had been known as "Team 64- The Gila Monster's". They won 14 awards and were Regional Champions in Las Vegas.[citation needed] They also brought home 2nd Place in their Division in Atlanta, Georgia at the FIRST Robotics National Competition.[citation needed]

[edit] Soccer Team

The Highland Hawks varsity soccer team took home their first 5A-I state championship, after defeating Gilbert High School in the State Championship. The final score was 1-0, with Highland's goal being scored in the first half by current Junior Sean Miller.[8]
