Highland Capital Partners is a venture capital firm headquartered in Lexington, MA, with offices located on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, CA, as well as Bethesda, MD. Since its inception in 1988, the firm has taken a sector-focused approach to investing in information technology, communications and healthcare companies. With more than $2.6 billion of committed capital, Highland has invested in and worked to create such firms as Altiga Networks, Ask Jeeves, Avid Technology, Be Free, CheckFree, Conor Medsystems, Continental Cable, EXACT Sciences, Lycos, MapQuest, New Oak Communications, Ocular Networks, Odyssey Healthcare, Sybase, Telica, Turbine, Inc., and WebLine Communications.

Of the twenty Highland investment professionals, three members of the team previously founded start-ups, ultimately taking them to successful public offerings. Peter Bell founded StorageNetworks, an information storage software and services company, and took the company from pioneering concept to over $120 million in annual revenue in three years. Bob Davis served as CEO of Lycos since its inception in 1995, leading it from a start-up with $2 million in venture capital funding to the fastest IPO in Nasdaq history. Tom Stemberg pioneered the office superstore industry when he founded Staples in 1986, and served as CEO of Staples for sixteen years before joining Highland.
