High Green

High Green is the northernmost suburb of Sheffield, England.
It is found to the North of Chapeltown and is served by a number of buses, though the nearest rail station is in Chapeltown.
High Green has expanded rapidly to fill its green belt limits within the last 20 years, now merging building-wise with Chapeltown. It does have its own distinctive areas, these include 'The Fosters' which largely refers to a dominant Tower block in the centre, which is suffering from a lack of maintenance and general malaise. The pretty scenery of the Wharncliffe Crags is not far from High Green and the High Green country park is within easy reach for all High Green residents. The dam set in the country park is a favorite place for fishermen, joggers, walkers and local children. The wild life that can be seen in the area of the dam is vast. The older, council-owned houses were refubished about 10 years ago and improved the overall aesthetic of the area.
The demographics of the suburb are mainly white, lower to middle class with an industrial background.
The centre of High Green has a village-like feel with a Post Office that has recently moved to the local shop, local pubs, a dentist, two Doctors' practices and a few shops along the main street, Wortley Road. The suburb has 4 primary schools (Angram Bank Primary, High Green Primary, Greengate Lane Primary and St. Mary's Primary), but no secondary school, pupils instead usually go to Ecclesfield school, approximately 2miles away. Other schools that children in the area commonly got to are Stocksbridge or Notre Dame.
High Green is the home of PACEs a school for children with cerebral palsy which uses the so-called "Conductive Education" approach. The school is also open to all and runs lots of events and classes for local people. In earlier years, PACEs was a regular secondary school, but has since been converted.
The highly popular band Arctic Monkeys hails from High Green. They mention the suburb in the song Red Lights Indicate Doors Are Secure, with the lyric, "It's High Green, mate, via Hillsborough please!"
